I've been feeling a little nostalgic lately. I was having some cheesecake (plain) during a birthday lunch and I have to say I get food memories when I eat a particular food. I might not be totally accurate with my food memories but cheesecake has a definite memory of braces and the downtown Bon Marche (now Macy's).
Every time I had to have my braces tightened. My mother would park at the downtown Bon Marche's parking lot and after the adjustments were made the cafe inside the store was conveniently located just across the sky bridge for the parking lot. I got to know cheesecake really well. I realized my mother had a weakness for them because we always seems to go home with an assortment of goodies from the bakery. They also had birthday cakes and would decorate, upon request, with Mum's in buttercream frosting! They also had the best (so I'm told) hot dogs in the basement cafe..
My parents must have been foodies because I also remember the first time I got my braces, my dad this time, took me to the (now defunct) Dog House Cafe. I distinctly remember having fried clams and fries and chewing on them with my sore teeth. I will always remember their mural "All roads lead to the Dog House"
